Solution for a dry, itchy scalp

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can cause flakes with itch and areas that look oily or irritated. Scalp psoriasis may produce thicker, well-defined scale. Head lice can cause intense itching and may leave small attached eggs near the hair roots. Folliculitis can cause tender, itchy bumps around hairs. A clinician or pharmacist may suggest medicated shampoo therapy for dandruff-related scaling, with instructions about how long it should remain on the scalp. If lice are found, use an appropriate head lice treatment and address close household contacts as advised. Persistent redness, thick scale, or bumps needs a dermatology assessment.

Seek medical advice for pus-filled bumps, spreading redness, significant pain, broken skin, patchy hair loss, or a scalp rash that does not settle. Arrange prompt review if itching is severe enough to disturb sleep or if lice treatment has not cleared the problem. Fever or swelling around the face warrants urgent attention.
