Head Lice Treatment

Head lice treatment targets live lice and their eggs, called nits, on the scalp and hair. Depending on age, pregnancy, medical history, and local product guidance, treatment may use a medicated lotion, a physical removal method, or a combination. A diagnosis matters because an itchy scalp can have other causes, and nits can be confused with dandruff or product residue.

Applying a lice product should not cause sharp pain, but the scalp may sting, feel cool, or become irritated. Wet combing can tug at tangled hair, especially when the hair is thick or long. Use the product exactly as directed and stop if there is severe burning, swelling, or a spreading rash.

Most safety problems come from using too much product, combining treatments, leaving a product on too long, or repeating it too soon. Check the age instructions and ask a pharmacist or clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, eczema, allergies, or treatment of a young child. Never use household insecticide or veterinary products on people.

Treatment works for the infestation present at the time, but a new exposure can lead to lice again. Some products need a planned second application because eggs may survive the first treatment. Continue checking the scalp and combing as directed, and treat confirmed live lice rather than repeatedly treating an itchy scalp alone.

Head lice spread mainly through close hair-to-hair contact. They do not reflect poor hygiene, and extensive home spraying is unnecessary. The most useful checks focus on live crawling lice near the scalp; nits farther along the hair shaft may be old or empty.

Treat people with confirmed live lice, following the product's age and health instructions. Household members and close contacts should be checked rather than automatically treated. If the main complaint is Itchy Scalp but no live lice are found, arrange assessment for another explanation instead of repeating lice products.

Check the scalp in bright light and confirm live lice when possible. Apply the chosen product to the hair and scalp exactly as directed, avoiding eyes and broken skin. Remove lice and nits with a fine-toothed comb, clean the comb between passes, and repeat the treatment only on the schedule provided. Check close contacts and avoid sharing combs, hats, or hair accessories.

Itching can continue for a short time because the scalp may remain irritated after lice are removed. Wash or handle bedding, towels, and recently used hair items according to local guidance, but avoid exhausting whole-home cleaning. Recheck the scalp and hair at the recommended interval, especially if live lice are seen again.

Products can cause irritation, allergic reactions, eye exposure, or breathing discomfort if misused. Do not layer different insecticidal products or use repeated applications outside the instructions. Seek prompt medical help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, severe blistering, or a child who becomes unusually unwell.

Wet combing with conditioner is a non-insecticidal option and may be preferred when products are unsuitable, although it requires patience and repeated checks. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend an age-appropriate alternative when a product has failed, caused irritation, or cannot be used safely.

Ask a pharmacist, dermatologist, or clinician to confirm the diagnosis when the scalp is very inflamed, treatment has not worked as directed, or live lice are difficult to identify. Bring the product name, application timing, and any reaction so the next recommendation can be safe and specific.
