Itchy Scalp: Causes, Clues and Scalp Care

An itchy scalp can arise from flaking, inflammation, irritated follicles, lice, or a reaction to hair and skin products.

Some people notice fine white flakes on the shoulders; others have greasy scale, tightly attached patches, tender spots, or small bumps around hairs. Scratching may produce soreness, scabs, or a burning feeling. Check whether symptoms sit at the hairline, behind the ears, at the crown, or across the whole scalp.
