Sliding sign and ectopic pregnancy

During a transvaginal ultrasound, the clinician may gently assess whether the ovary or nearby structures slide relative to the uterus. Restricted movement can reflect adhesions, inflammation or blood in the pelvis, but it is not specific to one diagnosis. The result is considered with the pregnancy location, the appearance of the tubes and ovaries, symptoms and changing pregnancy hormone results. Pelvic inflammatory disease can be one reason for scarring or reduced mobility.

Ask what the scan showed, whether a pregnancy was seen inside the uterus, and what follow-up is needed. If the location is not clear, your team may arrange repeat ultrasound or blood testing. Keep the appointment even if discomfort is mild, because an ectopic pregnancy can change as it develops. Do not rely on a single ultrasound phrase to decide whether you need care.

Get emergency help for severe or worsening pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness or heavy vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy. These symptoms may signal internal bleeding and need immediate assessment. Pelvic pain in early pregnancy should be discussed urgently when it is one-sided, persistent or accompanied by bleeding, even if an earlier scan was reassuring.
