Short answer

A Skyra MRI scanner is a magnetic imaging system that creates detailed pictures of body tissues without using ionising radiation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

A Skyra MRI scanner is a magnetic imaging system that creates detailed pictures of body tissues without using ionising radiation. It uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves while you lie on a moving table that passes through the scanner. The machine name describes the scanner platform; your radiology team chooses sequences and contrast according to the body area and clinical question.

What the examination is like

The radiographer positions coils around the area being examined and asks you to remain still. The scanner makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds, so hearing protection is provided. You can usually speak with staff throughout the examination. A [Breast MRI](/treatments/diagnostics-and-imaging/breast-mri/) uses tailored images of breast tissue, while a general [MRI Scan](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/mri-scan/) may assess other regions.

Preparing safely

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, implanted pumps, metal fragments, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, pregnancy, kidney problems, allergies, and previous contrast reactions. Remove metal objects and follow any fasting instructions. If enclosed spaces are difficult, discuss support before the appointment; sedation requires separate planning and an escort. Bring information about implants when available. More background is available under [MRI Scanner](/technology/mri-scanner/).

After the scan

MRI itself does not usually require recovery time. If contrast was used, tell staff immediately about breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, or feeling faint. Contact the imaging service for a delayed reaction or persistent pain at an injection site. If you received sedation, follow the escort and activity restrictions given by the clinic.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which body area will be scanned, whether contrast is planned, how long you should expect to remain still, how implant safety will be checked, and when the report will be shared.

Questions people ask

Is a Skyra scan different from an MRI scan?

Skyra is a scanner platform made for MRI. The examination still follows MRI safety screening and uses sequences selected for your clinical question.

What if I feel claustrophobic?

Tell the team before scanning. They can explain the process, offer communication methods, and discuss suitable support or sedation planning.
