Skyra MRI scanner: what to know

A Skyra MRI scanner is a magnetic imaging system that creates detailed pictures of body tissues without using ionising radiation. It uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves while you lie on a moving table that passes through the scanner. The machine name describes the scanner platform; your radiology team chooses sequences and contrast according to the body area and clinical question.

The radiographer positions coils around the area being examined and asks you to remain still. The scanner makes loud knocking or buzzing sounds, so hearing protection is provided. You can usually speak with staff throughout the examination. MRI itself does not usually require recovery time. If contrast was used, tell staff immediately about breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, or feeling faint. Contact the imaging service for a delayed reaction or persistent pain at an injection site. If you received sedation, follow the escort and activity restrictions given by the clinic.
