What should you know about silicosis chest x ray?

Silicosis follows inhalation of respirable crystalline silica, often during cutting, drilling, grinding, or processing stone, concrete, or similar materials. An X-ray may show small rounded opacities or changes around the upper lungs, but appearances can overlap with infections and other lung conditions. The clinician will connect the image with your work history, symptoms, examination, and previous images. A normal image does not always settle a concern when exposure or symptoms continue.

Tell the clinician exactly what materials you handled, how dust was controlled, whether you used respiratory protection, and when the exposure occurred. Bring earlier reports or images if available. Further assessment may include breathing tests, oxygen measurement, or other imaging. Avoid further dust exposure and follow workplace safety advice while the assessment is underway. A GP consultation can help coordinate review; tuberculosis screening may be considered when symptoms or imaging make infection part of the differential.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness at rest, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or sudden confusion. Arrange medical review for a cough that does not settle, increasing breathlessness, wheezing, fever, or unexplained weight loss, especially with silica exposure. These symptoms can have several causes, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, or chronic cough, so do not wait for an X-ray appointment if they are worsening.
