What should you know about silent migraine?

The term usually refers to migraine activity with aura or other migraine features but little or no head pain. Symptoms may include flashing lights, zigzag patterns, tingling, temporary speech difficulty, Dizziness, Nausea, sound or Light Sensitivity, and Vertigo. Symptoms can build and then clear, but the pattern differs between people. Migraine may present without headache; new, prolonged, or unusual symptoms should not be assumed to be migraine.

Move to a quiet, dim room, rest, sip fluids, and avoid driving if vision or balance is affected. Note start time, symptoms, sleep, stress, food, and recovery. A clinician can distinguish migraine from eye, inner-ear, circulation, or neurological causes and discuss treatment. Keep regular meals and sleep where possible.

Seek emergency care for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, facial drooping, new speech difficulty, fainting, a sudden severe Headache, persistent vision loss, fever with neck stiffness, or symptoms that do not resolve as expected. A first episode, pregnancy, recent injury, or major pattern change warrants prompt advice.
