Silent asthma attack symptoms: what to know

Wheezing is caused by air moving through narrowed airways. During a serious flare, airflow can become so limited that wheezing fades or disappears; this quiet sound is not reassuring. A person may instead breathe rapidly, struggle to finish sentences, feel exhausted, or use the muscles around the neck and ribs to breathe. Asthma commonly presents with cough, chest tightness, and wheezing, but symptoms can vary between episodes. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy may aggravate asthma in some people.

Stop exertion, sit upright, and use your prescribed reliever inhaler according to your written asthma plan. Do not drive yourself if breathing is severely difficult. If your medicine is not helping promptly, symptoms are worsening, or you have a quiet chest with marked breathlessness, call emergency services. A nebuliser treatment may be given by clinicians when inhaled medicine needs supervised delivery; it should not delay urgent assessment.

Seek emergency help for blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, severe exhaustion, inability to speak in full sentences, or rapidly worsening breathing. Arrange a medical review after any attack, even if symptoms settle, so the trigger, inhaler technique, and prevention plan can be checked.
