What should you know about shrimp allergy test?

Testing may involve a skin-prick test, a blood test for shrimp-specific antibodies, or another supervised approach chosen by an allergy clinician. A positive result can show sensitisation, but it does not by itself prove that eating shrimp causes symptoms. A negative result also needs to be considered alongside the timing and details of any reaction. Your clinician may ask about shrimp, shellfish, sauces, cross-contact, previous symptoms and other allergies. Food Allergy is the broader condition being assessed; allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, asthma or pet allergy may be separate problems.

Write down what you ate, how much, how soon symptoms began and which body systems were affected. Tell the clinician about medicines, pregnancy, skin conditions and previous severe reactions because these can affect test planning. Do not deliberately eat shrimp at home to check the result. Until you receive personal advice, avoid the suspected trigger and ask about safe substitutes, label reading and cross-contact in restaurants. A clinician may recommend a supervised food challenge when the history and test findings do not agree.

After eating shrimp, seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives with dizziness, repeated vomiting, collapse or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can be features of Anaphylaxis. If you have a prescribed adrenaline device, use it according to your emergency plan and call emergency services; do not wait for test results. Mild isolated itching or a few hives still deserve prompt medical advice because a future reaction may differ.
