Shooting pain from the hip down the leg: what to know

Short answer
Shooting pain from the hip down the leg may come from an irritated nerve, a strained muscle, or a problem within the hip joint.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track
- Location, triggers, numbness, weakness, and walking tolerance
- Avoid
- Forceful stretching and prolonged bed rest
What the pattern can mean
Pain that travels below the buttock and down the back of the leg can fit a nerve-related pattern such as Sciatica. Pain centred at the outer hip may relate to Gluteal Tendinopathy, while catching, stiffness, or pain with twisting can occur with Hip Impingement or a Hip Labral Tear. Gradual aching and reduced movement can accompany Hip Osteoarthritis. A fall, inability to bear weight, or sudden severe hip pain needs prompt assessment because a Hip Fracture is another possibility.
The direction of pain alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician may check your walking, hip movement, strength, sensation, and reflexes, then decide whether imaging or other tests are useful.
What you can do now
Reduce activities that clearly trigger the pain, but avoid staying in bed for long periods. Change position regularly, take short comfortable walks, and use a supported sitting position. A wrapped cold pack may help after a flare; gentle warmth can feel better for muscle tightness. Do not force stretches or repeatedly test painful movements. A physiotherapist can grade exercises for hip strength, mobility, and nerve sensitivity after an examination. Treatment is based on the cause; Total Hip Replacement is relevant only for selected advanced hip-joint problems, not for every shooting pain.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if the pain persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by numbness or weakness. Seek urgent help after a significant fall, with inability to stand or bear weight, or with a hot, swollen hip and fever. Emergency assessment is needed for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or rapidly worsening weakness in both legs. Sudden leg swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness also requires urgent care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Where does the pain pattern suggest it starts? Do I have any changes in strength, sensation, or reflexes? Which movements should I temporarily modify? What symptoms would change the urgency of review? Would physiotherapy or imaging help at this stage?

Questions people ask
Can hip pain travel down the leg?
Yes. Hip, buttock, muscle, and nerve problems can all create pain that travels into the thigh or lower leg.
Should shooting leg pain be checked?
Arrange an assessment when it persists or affects strength, sensation, sleep, or walking; seek urgent care for severe red flags.
