Sepsis and vitamin C

Vitamin C is a nutrient involved in normal body functions, but taking a supplement does not diagnose, prevent, or treat suspected sepsis on its own. Sepsis can worsen quickly because the body's response to infection affects organs and circulation. Symptoms such as fever, chills, feeling generally unwell, or weakness need assessment in context.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department for suspected sepsis. Bring a list of medicines and supplements if it is easy to do so. Do not replace prescribed antibiotics or hospital treatment with oral supplements, and do not start high-dose products without clinical advice.

The medical team may investigate the infection source, give antibiotics, fluids, oxygen, and other organ support, then monitor the response. Any vitamin treatment would be considered alongside this care, not instead of it.

Get emergency help for confusion, difficulty waking, fainting, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, cold clammy skin, very little urine, or rapidly worsening weakness. Fever or chills with a sudden decline also needs immediate assessment. A supplement must never be used as a reason to watch these symptoms at home.

Ask whether vitamin C is suitable with your medical history, whether it could interact with treatment, what the suspected infection is, and which warning signs require immediate escalation.
