What does respiratory rate show in sepsis?

A faster-than-usual breathing rate can occur when the body is working harder because of infection, fever, pain, low oxygen, or changes in acid balance. It is a warning sign to interpret with pulse, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen level, alertness, urine output, and the person’s usual health. A respiratory rate alone cannot confirm or exclude sepsis.

Breathing symptoms may come from an infection in the lungs, such as pneumonia, but sepsis can affect the body beyond the original infection. Someone may be seriously unwell even without obvious chest symptoms.

Healthcare staff usually count breaths while the person is resting and observe effort, depth, sounds, and oxygen levels. Do not rely on a home count to decide that urgent care is unnecessary. If breathing becomes faster, shallow, noisy, or difficult, tell the clinical team immediately. Sit upright if comfortable, loosen restrictive clothing, and follow emergency instructions while waiting for help.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak normally because of breathing, blue or grey lips, collapse, new confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Urgent review is also needed when a new breathing change occurs with fever, chills, profound weakness, or feeling generally unwell. Do not wait for a particular respiratory-rate reading.

Ask what your breathing rate and oxygen reading mean together, whether a lung infection is suspected, how often observations will be repeated, and which breathing changes require immediate action.
