What is a sepsis order set?

The exact order set varies between hospitals and patients. It may prompt clinicians to record vital signs, assess alertness and urine output, look for an infection source, collect samples, review medicines and allergies, and consider fluids, oxygen, antibiotics, or other treatment when clinically appropriate. It supports a coordinated response but does not replace examination or professional judgement.

The team may also use the order set to repeat observations, review test results, adjust treatment, and document decisions. A suspected source could include pneumonia, cellulitis, or a urinary tract infection.

You may be asked about symptom timing, recent infections, medicines, allergies, fluid intake, and changes in behaviour or breathing. Staff may attach monitoring equipment, place a cannula, collect samples, or give prescribed treatment. Tell the team if you feel worse, develop a rash, have pain at an injection site, or have difficulty breathing. Do not take extra medicines without checking with the treating team.

Seek emergency help for confusion, collapse, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to stay awake, or rapidly worsening weakness during an infection. A checklist is used after concern arises; it should not be a reason to wait at home or wait for a particular test result.
