What should you know about what can cause sepsis?

Infections linked with sepsis may begin in the lungs, urinary system, skin, soft tissues, abdomen, or elsewhere. Pneumonia, a urinary tract infection, and cellulitis are examples of conditions that can spread or trigger a severe body response. The germ may be bacterial, viral, fungal, or another type. Sometimes the starting site is not obvious at first. Sepsis is about the body's response and organ stress, not simply the presence of germs in the blood.

Get prompt medical advice when an infection is worsening, spreading, or accompanied by marked weakness, confusion, or breathing changes. Explain the original symptoms, recent procedures, wounds, urinary symptoms, cough, medicines, and health conditions. Do not stop prescribed treatment early or use leftover antibiotics. If the person is severely unwell, use emergency services rather than arranging routine transport.

Emergency assessment is needed for new confusion, difficulty waking, severe breathlessness, fainting, blue or mottled skin, cold clammy skin, very little urine, or fast deterioration. Fever or chills can accompany sepsis, but a normal temperature does not rule it out. Feeling generally unwell after an infection deserves attention when it is intense or progressing.
