What should you know about sepsis and liver failure?

Sepsis is a dangerous whole-body response to infection. Changes in blood flow and inflammation can reduce how well organs work, including the liver. Liver involvement may affect processing of waste and medicines, production of proteins that help blood clot, and the handling of bile. A person may have yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual sleepiness, nausea, or confusion, although symptoms vary. A liver problem can also have other causes, so these signs do not identify sepsis on their own.

If sepsis or sudden liver deterioration is possible, seek emergency medical help. Do not wait for a home test or try to manage worsening symptoms alone. Tell the clinician about the suspected infection, new medicines, liver disease, alcohol use, allergies, and when the change began. Until assessed, avoid taking extra medicines without advice, particularly products that may affect the liver. Bring a medicine list if this does not delay help.

Call emergency services for confusion, difficulty staying awake, trouble breathing, faintness, cold or clammy skin, very little urine, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening weakness. Fever or chills with a person who looks severely unwell also warrants urgent assessment. Yellow skin or eyes during an infection should be reported promptly, especially when paired with drowsiness, bleeding, or abdominal swelling.

Ask what infection is suspected, how liver function is being checked, whether medicines need adjustment, and which changes should trigger an immediate return. You can also ask how hydration, nutrition, and any existing liver condition affect the care plan.
