Seborrheic dermatitis around the mustache

The upper lip and sides of the nose contain oil-producing skin where seborrheic dermatitis may develop. Scale can collect at the hair roots, while redness may extend into the creases beside the nose. The area may burn after shaving or after using fragranced wax, balm, cleanser, or dye. Dandruff on the scalp or scaling around the eyebrows can occur alongside facial symptoms, but a rash limited to the upper lip can also be contact dermatitis, eczema, or another condition. A diagnosis depends on the pattern and examination.

Rinse the mustache and the skin beneath it thoroughly after cleansing, then pat dry. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser on the surrounding skin and avoid scraping away attached flakes. Pause products that sting and use a clean razor with gentle technique if shaving. A clinician may prescribe a facial antifungal or another treatment; apply it exactly as directed and keep it away from the lips and inside the mouth. Do not borrow scalp medicines for the upper lip without checking first.

Seek an appointment if the rash keeps returning, spreads beyond the mustache, or remains despite gentle cleansing and product changes. Get prompt advice for painful fissures, pus, honey-coloured crust, significant swelling, fever, or trouble involving the lips or eyes.
