What oily skin feels like
The face may look shiny soon after cleansing, especially across the forehead, nose, and chin. Skin can feel slick, makeup may move or separate, and pores may look more noticeable. Some people have oiliness with dry or tight areas at the same time. Heat, humidity, stress, hormonal shifts, and irritating products can change how much sebum is noticeable.
Is oily skin urgent?
Oily skin alone is not usually an emergency. Arrange a dermatology assessment if it is new and persistent, comes with painful deep spots, marked redness, crusting, or hair and scalp changes, or is affecting daily life. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling, fever, or eye involvement.
Possible causes
The causes below are listed alphabetically, not by likelihood. Acne can combine excess sebum with blocked follicles and inflammation. Hormonal Acne may follow androgen-sensitive changes in sebum production and follicle activity. Seborrheic Dermatitis can cause oiliness alongside flaky scale and redness in areas rich in sebaceous glands.
How clinicians assess it
A clinician asks when the oiliness began, where it appears, which products you use, and whether spots, itch, scale, or cycle-related changes occur. They inspect the skin and scalp for blocked follicles, inflammation, redness, and scale. The diagnosis is usually clinical; tests may be considered when the history suggests a medication, endocrine, or other underlying factor.
Treatment depends on the cause
Care may include a gentle cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturiser, and targeted treatment for blocked follicles or inflammation. Acne or Hormonal Acne may need prescription or non-prescription medicines selected for the skin pattern. Seborrheic Dermatitis may need treatment aimed at yeast-associated scale and inflammation. Isotretinoin Treatment is a specialist option for selected severe or persistent acne; it requires medical supervision and safety counselling.
Reducing recurring oiliness
Wash gently rather than scrubbing, and avoid repeatedly stripping the skin because irritation can worsen discomfort and rebound shine. Choose light, fragrance-free products labelled non-comedogenic, remove makeup before sleep, and change products one at a time. Use sunscreen suited to oily or acne-prone skin. Keep a short record of product changes, heat exposure, and flare patterns to discuss at review.
Symptoms that may occur with it
Oiliness may occur with enlarged-looking pores, blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots, itch, flaky scale, or redness. The combination and distribution matter more than shine alone: scalp scale points assessment in a different direction from isolated facial shine.
What to do next
Track the affected areas and accompanying symptoms, then seek a clinician’s view if simple care is not helping or if inflammation is developing. Early assessment can distinguish a surface oil pattern from a condition needing prescription treatment and can reduce picking-related marks.

Questions people ask
Can oily skin and dry skin occur together?
Yes. The central face may be oily while the cheeks feel dry or tight, particularly after harsh cleansing or in a changing climate.
Should I stop moisturising oily skin?
No. A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser can support the skin barrier without adding a heavy, greasy layer.
