What should you know about seborrheic dermatitis in the beard?

Seborrheic dermatitis affects oil-rich skin, and beard hair can make it harder to see or wash the underlying skin. Common features include redness, greasy flakes, itch, and scaling around the moustache, chin, jaw, or sideburns. Oily skin may make the scale more noticeable, but dryness from harsh washing can also worsen irritation.

Dandruff may coexist when the scalp is affected. A clinician may also consider contact dermatitis, psoriasis, folliculitis, or infection if the pattern is unusual or painful.

Wash the beard and the skin beneath it gently, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry. Avoid scraping scale or applying heavily fragranced oils while the area is active.
