Scalp Coloring for Bald Spots: What You Should Know

Colour products, sprays, powders, or professional pigment techniques can make the scalp and surrounding hair appear more blended. Results depend on hair colour, skin tone, patch size, lighting, washing, sweating, and whether the skin is smooth or inflamed. Colouring cannot restore follicles, stop shedding, or replace assessment of a new patch.

A bald patch can have different explanations. Alopecia areata may cause smooth, sharply defined areas, while scalp ringworm can cause scaling, broken hairs, or inflammation and needs medical treatment. The appearance of a patch alone is not enough to identify its cause.

Have a new, enlarging, itchy, scaly, tender, or inflamed patch assessed before covering it. If you use a product, patch-test it as directed, avoid broken skin, wash it off if burning or swelling develops, and do not share applicators. Keep expectations realistic: camouflage changes appearance for a limited period. A clinician can discuss treatment for the cause and, in selected situations, options such as a hair transplant.

Seek assessment when hair loss is sudden, spreading, painful, associated with scaling or pus, or accompanied by loss of eyelashes or eyebrows. Prompt care matters when infection is possible. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing trouble, or a severe reaction after applying colour.

Ask what may be causing the patch, whether the scalp skin is safe to colour, which ingredients to avoid, and whether treatment should begin before camouflage. Ask how to monitor enlargement or new patches.
