What should you know about same day MRI scan?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images without x-rays. Before scanning, staff ask about implanted devices, metal fragments, kidney problems, pregnancy, allergies, and anxiety in enclosed spaces. Some examinations use contrast material to make particular tissues easier to assess. The scan itself requires you to lie still, and the scanner makes loud sounds; hearing protection is provided. An MRI can help investigate areas such as the brain, spine, joints, or organs, but the images must be interpreted alongside your symptoms and other tests.

When requesting a same-day appointment, provide the referral reason and mention any implant, pacemaker, metal injury, kidney condition, or previous contrast reaction. Follow the centre's instructions about food, drink, clothing, and medicines. Remove jewellery and leave cards, phones, and other magnetic items outside the scan room. Ask whether you can take someone with you if you feel anxious, and arrange transport if a calming medicine is prescribed. A scan may be postponed if the safety checklist is incomplete.

An MRI appointment should not delay emergency assessment. Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, a seizure, severe breathing trouble, or a rapidly worsening headache. After contrast, get prompt advice for facial swelling, wheezing, widespread hives, or severe dizziness. Contact the imaging centre about a new rash or worsening symptoms after the appointment.
