Saliva allergy test: what to know

Commercial saliva kits may advertise testing for many allergens, but a result does not automatically prove that an exposure caused your symptoms. Allergy assessment considers what happened, how quickly it developed, the amount of exposure and whether it recurred. Standard evaluation may use a skin prick test or a blood test chosen for the suspected allergen. Conditions such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, allergic conjunctivitis and food allergy have different patterns.

Write down the suspected trigger, timing, symptoms, treatment used and whether you needed urgent care. Do not intentionally expose yourself to a suspected allergen to check a kit result. Bring the report to a qualified clinician, who can decide whether targeted testing is useful and explain what a positive or negative result means for you.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, faintness, collapse or rapidly worsening symptoms after an exposure. These may be signs of anaphylaxis. A home test cannot predict whether a future reaction will be mild or severe, so ask about an emergency action plan after a concerning reaction.

Ask which test matches your symptoms, whether medicines could affect testing, and how results will change your treatment or avoidance plan. Discuss any symptoms linked to pets, dust, foods, pollen or medicines.
