Rosacea around the mouth: what to know

Rosacea usually involves the central face and can extend toward the nose, cheeks and mouth area. The skin may flush, feel hot or burn, and develop small acne-like bumps. A rash concentrated around the mouth may also reflect perioral dermatitis, contact irritation, eczema or a reaction to a product. Toothpaste, cosmetics, fragranced skincare and topical steroid use can be relevant clues. The border directly next to the lips may look different from the surrounding rash, so describe its exact pattern during an assessment.

Pause new or irritating cosmetics and use lukewarm water with a mild cleanser. Apply a bland moisturiser if it does not sting, and avoid picking or scrubbing the bumps. Do not start or stop a steroid cream on the face without medical advice. Record products, foods, heat exposure and timing of flares. Treatment may include azelaic acid or other clinician-selected options; light treatments are generally considered for suitable facial redness or vessels, not an undiagnosed rash beside the lips.

See a clinician if the rash spreads, repeatedly returns, forms painful cracks, affects eating, or persists after irritants are removed. Get urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, rapidly worsening swelling, or a widespread blistering reaction.
