What pimples can feel like

Pimples may feel like rough plugs, tender red bumps, pus-filled spots, or deeper painful lumps. They can occur on the face, chest, back, shoulders, hairline, or beard area. Some itch rather than hurt, while others become sore when touched. Marks may remain after a spot settles, especially if it is squeezed or repeatedly rubbed.

Pimples are raised skin spots caused by blocked, irritated, or inflamed hair follicles, and their treatment depends on the pattern and cause.

Is this urgent?

Pimples usually do not need emergency care. Arrange a dermatology review if deep painful lumps, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or rapid worsening develop. Seek prompt advice when spots affect the eyes, leave repeated scars, or are causing significant distress. A clinician can also review a sudden eruption after a new medicine or product.

Possible causes

The following causes are listed alphabetically, not by likelihood. Acne involves blocked follicles and inflammation. Cystic acne produces deeper, tender nodules. Folliculitis is inflammation around follicles and may follow sweating, friction, or hair removal. Hormonal acne can follow hormone shifts and often follows a recurring lower-face pattern. Fungal acne, also called Malassezia folliculitis, tends to produce similar itchy bumps. Perioral dermatitis causes clustered bumps around the mouth or nose. Razor bumps occur when shaved hairs curve back into skin. Rosacea can cause acne-like bumps alongside facial flushing or persistent redness.

How a clinician diagnoses pimples

Diagnosis usually starts with an examination of the spots, their distribution, and the skin around them. The clinician may ask when they began, whether they itch or hurt, how shaving or sweating affects them, and which medicines or cosmetics touch the area. The presence of blackheads, deep nodules, uniform bumps, facial flushing, or mouth-area irritation helps separate possible causes. Testing is sometimes considered when the appearance is unusual or infection is suspected.

Treatment depends on the cause

Care may include a gentle cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturiser, and a plan chosen for the diagnosis. Benzoyl peroxide treatment can help some acne-related inflamed spots but may irritate skin and lighten fabrics. Prescription options may be used for persistent acne, hormonal patterns, or deep nodules. Isotretinoin treatment is reserved for selected severe or scarring acne and requires medical supervision. Folliculitis, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, and razor bumps need different approaches; avoid borrowing someone else’s prescription. LED Light Therapy may be discussed as an add-on for selected acne patterns, not as a substitute for diagnosis.

Reducing future breakouts

Wash gently after sweating, keep hands away from active spots, and avoid squeezing. Choose products labelled non-comedogenic when possible, and introduce one new product at a time. Clean items that press against the skin, such as helmet straps or phone screens. If shaving triggers bumps, use a clean sharp tool, shave in the direction of growth, and reduce close passes. A dermatologist can tailor prevention when breakouts recur around the same time or leave marks.

Symptoms that can occur with pimples

Notice whether you also have blackheads, oily skin, tenderness, itch, crusting, facial flushing, burning around the mouth, or ingrown hairs. Record whether the spots are all similar in size or whether deep lumps and scars are appearing.

When a review may help

Persistent or painful pimples can lead to dark marks, scars, repeated irritation, or avoidance of social activities. Early assessment is useful when the pattern is unclear or home care has not helped. Treatment can then target the underlying condition rather than the appearance alone.

Questions people ask

Should I squeeze a pimple?

Squeezing can push inflammation deeper and increase the chance of marks or scarring, so use gentle cleansing and seek advice for painful or recurring spots.

Can every pimple be treated with acne products?

No. Similar-looking bumps can come from folliculitis, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, or razor bumps, which may need different treatment.
