Rosacea inside the nose: what it may mean

Rosacea may cause flushing, burning, sensitivity, scaling or small bumps on the nose and nearby face. The moist lining inside the nostril is different from facial skin, so crusting, tenderness, a pimple-like spot or repeated bleeding should not automatically be labelled rosacea. Rubbing, nose picking, dry air, fragranced products and frequent wiping can injure the area. A clinician may inspect both the outer nose and nostril, ask about discharge and triggers, and check whether the problem is local or part of a wider facial pattern.

Avoid squeezing, scratching or inserting cotton buds into the sore area. Keep cleansers, exfoliants, retinoids and cosmetic products away from the inner nostril unless prescribed for that site. Clean the outer skin gently, and reduce exposure to a trigger you have clearly linked with flushing. Do not use leftover antibiotic, antifungal or steroid products inside the nose without advice. If outer redness or visible vessels are the concern, a dermatologist may discuss Azelaic Acid Treatment, IPL Photofacial or Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment; these do not replace evaluation of an inner-nose lesion.

Arrange an appointment if discomfort lasts, returns, forms a crust, or comes with recurrent bleeding or a persistent bump. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or vision symptoms. A painful swollen nose deserves prompt attention because infection can need treatment beyond skin care.
