Risks for ectopic pregnancy

A previous ectopic pregnancy, damage or scarring in a fallopian tube, pelvic surgery, fertility treatment, or pelvic infection such as [Pelvic Inflammatory Disease](/conditions/pelvic-inflammatory-disease/) can be associated with ectopic pregnancy. Sometimes it occurs without a known risk factor, so symptoms in early pregnancy should not be dismissed because your history seems uncomplicated.

The pregnancy may be in a tube, but it can also implant elsewhere outside the womb. As it grows, it can damage nearby tissue and cause internal bleeding.
