A Cat, Ringworm and a Bald Spot: What to Know

Scalp ringworm can cause a round or uneven bald patch, broken hairs, scale, itch, tenderness or small spots of inflammation. Cats can carry fungal spores and pass them through close contact, although exposure does not prove the cause of a hair-loss patch. Alopecia areata commonly produces smooth patches without scale, while pulling, tight hairstyles, irritation and other scalp conditions can also affect hair. A clinician may examine the scalp, hairs and skin, and may take a sample when the appearance is unclear.

Avoid sharing brushes, hats, pillows and towels, and wash items that touch the scalp. Do not scratch, pluck hairs or apply hair-growth products to an undiagnosed patch. Scalp ringworm usually needs prescription oral antifungal treatment because creams may not reach the infected hair roots. Arrange veterinary care for the cat and follow advice about cleaning the home. Hair transplant treatment is not a first step while an active infection or unexplained hair loss remains; the cause should be settled before considering restoration.

Arrange a prompt dermatology review for a tender, boggy, swollen scalp, pus, crusting, fever, rapidly enlarging hair loss or swollen neck glands. Early treatment can reduce inflammation and the risk of lasting follicle damage. Seek quicker care for a child with a new patch, widespread scaling, or a person with reduced immunity.

Ask whether the patch looks more like scalp ringworm or alopecia areata, whether testing is needed, and whether close contacts should be checked. Share when the patch appeared, whether the cat has bald or scaly areas, and every scalp product or treatment used.
