What should you know about a right lateral chest X-ray?

The beam passes through the chest from one side, helping the reader see areas that can overlap on a front view. It can add detail about the position and extent of an opacity, fluid, collapse or other change. An image is not a diagnosis by itself; symptoms, examination findings and the radiology report provide the context.

Follow the clinician's advice about reviewing the report. Keep a record of symptoms such as cough, fever, breathlessness or chest discomfort and when they began. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden confusion, fainting or chest pain that is severe or does not settle. Contact a clinician promptly for coughing blood, persistent fever or worsening breathlessness. A cough that continues may need assessment for causes including Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Bronchiectasis or Chronic Cough.
