What should you know about restrictive bronchiolitis?

The bronchioles are small breathing tubes deep in the lungs. Inflammation, swelling, or later scarring can reduce the space available for air to move. Bronchiolitis commonly follows a respiratory infection in young children, while a restrictive or persistent pattern may need a more detailed assessment. A child may develop Cough, Wheezing, fever, rapid breathing, reduced feeding, or unusual tiredness. Symptoms can overlap with other chest conditions, so the sound of breathing alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a Child Health Consultation when a child has ongoing cough, wheeze, or breathing effort, particularly after an illness. Offer fluids and allow rest; use fever medicine only as directed for the child’s age and circumstances. Keep smoke, vapour, and strong fragrances away from the child. A clinician may assess oxygenation, breathing effort, hydration, and the need for treatment such as Nebuliser Treatment. Do not use leftover antibiotics or inhalers without advice.

Seek emergency care if the child is struggling to breathe, has pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pulling-in, cannot drink, becomes difficult to wake, or is rapidly worsening. Prompt review is also needed for persistent fever, worsening wheeze, fewer wet nappies, or marked sleepiness. Babies and children with existing heart or lung problems may need earlier assessment.
