How to reduce gout pain and swelling

Short answer
To reduce gout symptoms, rest the joint, cool it gently, drink normally, and use prescribed flare medicine as directed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- During a flare
- Rest, raise, cool gently, and follow your prescribed plan.
- Do not change
- Do not stop long-term medicine without medical advice.
What a gout flare means
Gout is inflammation caused by urate crystals collecting in a joint. Pain, warmth, redness, and swelling can appear suddenly, often in a foot, ankle, knee, or another joint. Joint Pain and Joint Swelling can have many causes, so a new flare should not be self-diagnosed. Kidney problems and some medicines can affect urate handling and treatment choices.
What may help
Rest and raise the affected limb when practical. A wrapped cold pack used for short, comfortable periods may reduce the feeling of heat; do not place ice directly on skin. Take only medicines recommended for you, because kidney disease, stomach ulcers, pregnancy, and other conditions change what is suitable. Between flares, discuss a long-term urate-lowering plan rather than stopping prescribed medicine when pain improves.
When to seek urgent care
Get prompt medical help for a first severe attack, fever, feeling very unwell, rapidly spreading redness, or a joint that cannot be moved. Infection can resemble gout and needs urgent treatment. Seek review if swelling does not settle, attacks recur, or you develop persistent Knee Pain, Knee Swelling, or Ankle Swelling.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the diagnosis needs joint-fluid testing, which flare treatment is safe with your other medicines, and whether Chronic Kidney Disease or Obesity affects your plan. Ask how to monitor urate and protect your joints between attacks.

Questions people ask
Should I massage a swollen gout joint?
Avoid forceful massage during a hot, painful flare because pressure can worsen discomfort. Rest and gentle cooling are safer comfort measures.
Can gout affect the knee?
Yes. Gout may inflame the knee as well as the toes, ankle, or other joints; a new swollen knee still needs assessment.
