What should you know about a RAST allergy test panel?

RAST is a commonly used name for a blood test that looks for IgE antibodies directed at selected allergens. A panel may include foods, house dust mites, pets, pollens, or other substances. It is different from testing every possible allergen. Detectable IgE indicates sensitisation; it does not by itself prove that an exposure causes symptoms or predict how severe a reaction would be.

Your clinician interprets the result alongside timing, symptoms, examination findings, and the amount and route of exposure. Allergy symptoms may involve the nose, eyes, skin, lungs, or digestive system.

Tell the clinician about reactions, foods or environments involved, medicines, asthma, and previous allergy tests. Follow the laboratory's instructions for the blood draw. Do not remove foods or pets solely because a panel is positive; unnecessary avoidance can affect nutrition and daily life. A clinician may recommend focused testing, supervised challenge, or another explanation for symptoms.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or widespread symptoms developing quickly after an exposure. These can be signs of anaphylaxis and need immediate treatment. A test appointment is not a substitute for an emergency plan. Seek clinical review for recurring symptoms even when a panel is negative or inconclusive.

Ask which allergens were included, whether the finding represents sensitisation or a clinically relevant allergy, and what exposure should be avoided. Clarify whether you need an action plan, medication advice, or referral for further assessment.
