Rapid weight loss without trying: what to know

Weight can fall when you eat less, absorb fewer nutrients, use more energy, or lose fluid. Stress, dental problems, medication effects, thyroid disease, diabetes, infection, and digestive conditions can all contribute. Cancer is one possible cause, but weight loss alone does not identify a cancer or show where a problem is located.

A clinician may ask when the change began, how appetite and swallowing have changed, and whether you have pain, bowel changes, cough, fever, night sweats, thirst, or fatigue. Examination and selected blood tests or scans are guided by your history. Until you are assessed, choose nourishing foods and fluids that you can tolerate. If eating is difficult, smaller meals more often may be easier. A clinician can decide whether you need dietary support or tests for a specific cause.

Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain, chest pain, or difficult breathing. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for new trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
