What should you know about radiology masterclass chest x ray?

The image can help clinicians assess the lungs, heart size, airways, ribs and the space around the lungs. It may support assessment of pneumonia, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis or a persistent cough, but an X-ray cannot explain every cough or chest symptom. Some abnormalities are subtle, and a normal image does not rule out every condition. The radiologist’s report is interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, previous images and medical history.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, and mention any difficulty standing or holding your breath. You may be asked to remove metal objects and briefly hold your breath while the image is taken. Ask the clinician who requested the test when and how you will receive the report. If the result is unclear or does not match your symptoms, follow-up may include repeat imaging, a GP consultation, blood tests or another assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, new confusion, fainting or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Arrange prompt review for coughing blood, a high fever with worsening breathing, or symptoms that are rapidly deteriorating. Do not wait for an X-ray report if you feel acutely unwell.

Ask what the report shows in plain language, whether it explains your symptoms, and whether you need follow-up. You can also ask whether a chest X-ray is enough, whether tuberculosis screening is relevant, and what change in symptoms should prompt earlier review.
