Qlaira and perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transition before periods stop, and hormone fluctuations can cause irregular or heavy periods, hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, or lower sexual desire. A combined pill such as Qlaira can suppress ovulation and alter bleeding patterns, which may make cycle symptoms easier to manage while also providing contraception. It can mask natural cycle changes, so bleeding during or after use needs to be interpreted in context. It is not the same as menopause hormone therapy and does not suit everyone.

Arrange a medication review rather than starting, stopping, or changing Qlaira without advice. Tell the clinician about migraine with aura, smoking, blood pressure problems, blood clots, liver disease, breast cancer, medicines, and any unexplained bleeding. Discuss your main goal: contraception, heavy or irregular periods, or symptoms such as flushes and sweats. Ask when contraception can stop, because pregnancy can still occur during the menopause transition.

Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe unusual headache while taking a combined pill. Arrange prompt review for persistent heavy bleeding, bleeding after sex, or bleeding that changes unexpectedly. A clinician may need to assess these symptoms rather than attributing them to perimenopause alone.
