Pseudosac and ectopic pregnancy

A pseudosac is fluid or blood within the womb that may appear as a sac during an early scan. Unlike a true gestational sac, it may lack features such as a yolk sac or embryo. It can occur with an ectopic pregnancy, although the scan finding alone cannot establish the diagnosis. An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the womb, often in a fallopian tube. Pregnancy hormone results, symptoms, and repeat imaging help clinicians understand what is happening.

Contact the pregnancy or emergency care team that arranged the scan and follow their plan for repeat blood tests or a transvaginal ultrasound. Keep a record of pain, bleeding, dizziness, and changes in symptoms. Do not delay assessment because a pseudosac can make an early scan difficult to interpret. If an ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, treatment may involve medication or surgery; a salpingectomy is an operation that removes a fallopian tube in selected situations.

Seek emergency help for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Pelvic pain deserves urgent assessment in early pregnancy even when a scan has shown a possible pseudosac.

Ask whether the scan showed a true gestational sac or only a pseudosac, when your pregnancy hormone level should be repeated, and when another ultrasound is needed. Ask which symptoms should take you straight to emergency care and what treatment options would be suitable if an ectopic pregnancy is diagnosed.
