Products for closed comedones: what to know

Closed comedones, also called whiteheads, form when oil and shed cells block a follicle beneath an intact surface. They look like small flesh-coloured or pale bumps and may feel rough rather than inflamed. They can occur with comedonal acne, but tiny firm bumps near the eyes or cheeks may instead be milia, which have a different structure. Picking can rupture the follicle and make inflammation or lingering marks more likely.

Cleanse gently and choose a non-comedogenic moisturiser. A topical retinoid can help prevent cells from collecting inside follicles; apply it as directed, introduce it slowly, and expect dryness or irritation while skin adjusts. Do not combine several strong exfoliants at once or scrub the bumps. Keep hair oils and heavy styling products away from acne-prone skin. An acne extraction facial may help selected surface blockages when performed by a trained professional, but it does not prevent new comedones.

See a dermatologist if bumps are spreading, painful, itchy, leaving marks, or unchanged after a consistent gentle routine.
