What should you know about private chest X-ray?

The test uses a small amount of X-ray radiation to create images of the chest. It may help assess conditions such as pneumonia, bronchiectasis or tuberculosis, and can show changes in the lungs, heart size or bones. It does not explain every cause of cough or chest discomfort, and an image that looks normal does not rule out every problem.

You normally stand or sit against the imaging equipment while holding your breath briefly. A radiographer may take more than one view. Tell the service if you could be pregnant, and mention previous chest imaging or relevant symptoms.

Begin with a GP Consultation or another qualified clinician who can decide whether imaging is appropriate and provide the right clinical information. Ask how the report will reach the clinician who requested it, how soon results are reviewed, and what happens if the image is unclear or needs follow-up.

Take a list of medicines, allergies and previous diagnoses. Wear clothing that allows the chest area to be assessed and remove metal items when asked. Do not treat the scan as a substitute for an examination when you feel unwell.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden chest pain, confusion, fainting, or coughing up blood. A private appointment should not delay emergency assessment. A persistent cough, fever or unexplained weight change still needs clinical review even if a scan is arranged.

Ask what question the chest X-ray is intended to answer, whether another test or examination is more suitable, and who will explain the report. You can also ask what symptoms should prompt immediate care and whether follow-up is needed after the result.
