What should you know about a Primovist MRI scan?

A Primovist MRI scan uses magnetic images and a liver-targeted contrast agent to help characterise liver tissue. A Primovist MRI scan is an MRI examination using an injected contrast agent that is taken up by liver cells. It can add detail when routine imaging does not fully characterise a liver finding.

You lie on a movable table that enters the MRI scanner. The scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, not X-rays, to create detailed images. Some sequences require you to hold your breath briefly. Primovist is given through a vein, and images are taken before and after injection so the radiologist can compare how tissue behaves.

Tell the imaging team about kidney problems, previous contrast reactions, pregnancy, implanted devices, metal fragments and severe claustrophobia. The contrast is not a treatment and an MRI result alone may not identify the exact cause of a lesion; a biopsy may sometimes be needed.

Follow the appointment instructions about food, drink and medicines. Wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery, cards and electronic devices. Bring details of implants and previous scans. During the examination, stay still and use the call button if you feel unwell. A radiographer can explain each stage.

Tell staff immediately about trouble breathing, swelling, dizziness, widespread itching or severe discomfort during or after the injection. After leaving, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or fainting. Contact the imaging service about a delayed rash or persistent unusual symptoms.
