What should you know about postobstructive pneumonia?

A narrowed or blocked bronchus can stop mucus and air moving normally into part of the lung. Germs may collect beyond that point, producing pneumonia that may not clear fully until the obstruction is identified and managed. Symptoms can include cough, fever, chills, breathlessness, chest discomfort and coughing up phlegm. Imaging may show changes in the lung, while further tests help clinicians understand whether mucus, inflammation, a foreign object or another blockage is involved. This is different from assuming that every cough is pneumonia.

Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and attend follow-up, even if fever improves. Rest, drink fluids if you can do so safely, and avoid smoking or smoky air. Keep a record of breathlessness, temperature changes, chest pain and sputum. A clinician may recommend repeat imaging or a respiratory assessment when symptoms persist, return or do not match the initial treatment response. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe chest pain or inability to stay awake. Urgent assessment is also needed for rapidly worsening fever or chills, coughing blood, dehydration or new confusion. Infection that spreads into the bloodstream can become sepsis, so deterioration after starting treatment should not be ignored.

Ask where the blockage is, what test found it, whether an airway specialist should review you, how response will be checked and which symptoms mean you should return sooner.
