Postnasal drip symptoms: what to look for

You may feel mucus moving down the back of your throat or notice a sticky coating that makes swallowing uncomfortable. Some people develop a dry or phlegmy cough, a raspy voice, bad breath, or a sore, irritated throat. Symptoms can be more noticeable on waking or after lying down.

Nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, facial pressure, or reduced smell can offer clues about the source. Allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, and acid reflux can overlap with these sensations. These symptoms do not establish one diagnosis without context and examination.

Record when the sensation appears, whether it follows meals or exposure to dust, and whether you have fever, facial pain, or breathing symptoms. Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong scents, and consider saline nasal care according to product instructions.

A pharmacist can discuss suitable treatment for allergy symptoms. If reflux features are present, mention them rather than assuming the throat sensation is nasal mucus. Do not use someone else’s prescription or continue a nasal decongestant beyond label guidance.

Arrange a review if symptoms last, recur frequently, affect sleep, or are accompanied by a persistent cough, facial pain, or reduced smell. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, swelling around an eye, severe headache, or rapid deterioration.
