What should you know about posterior cervical instrumentation?

Posterior cervical instrumentation uses hardware placed from the back of the neck to support alignment and stability, often as part of Cervical Fusion. The reason for surgery may include Cervical Spondylosis or Cervical Radiculopathy, but the operation and recovery plan depend on the levels treated and the spinal cord or nerve findings. Neck stiffness, muscle soreness, fatigue, and altered sleep positions can occur early. Hardware supports healing; it does not make the neck immune to future strain.

Wear a cervical collar if prescribed and keep the incision protected according to the surgical instructions. Walk regularly in short, comfortable periods, keeping your head and neck aligned. Avoid lifting, sudden neck rotation, high-impact activity, and driving until cleared. Take pain medicines as directed and check with the team before adding anti-inflammatory medicines or supplements. Rehabilitation may begin with posture, shoulder, and walking work before more demanding exercises. If a cage, Plate and Screws, or other implant is used, your surgeon can explain its purpose.

Seek emergency care for new or worsening weakness, loss of hand coordination, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening neck pain after an injury. Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, spreading redness, drainage, wound opening, new arm numbness, increasing swallowing difficulty, or a collar that causes skin damage. A fall should be reported even if the incision looks unchanged.

Ask how to position your neck for sleep, when the collar can come off, what lifting limit applies, when driving is allowed, and which changes in strength, sensation, walking, or wound appearance require immediate review.
