Post nasal drip cough: what should you know?

A drip-related cough often comes with throat clearing, a blocked or runny nose, hoarseness, or a mucus sensation. Allergic Rhinitis and the Common Cold can increase drainage. Acid Reflux may irritate the throat without obvious heartburn. Asthma can cause cough with wheezing, chest tightness, or breathlessness, while Acute Bronchitis may follow an infection. The sound of a cough alone cannot identify its cause.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and dusty air, and consider a saline nasal rinse made with sterile or previously boiled and cooled water. Treat congestion only with products suitable for you, following label or professional advice. If reflux seems connected, avoid meals close to bedtime and notice whether certain foods trigger symptoms. Take prescribed medicines as directed and record when the cough occurs, what comes with it, and what makes it better or worse.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, or coughing blood. Arrange a medical review if the cough is worsening, disrupts sleep, follows repeated episodes, or comes with fever, wheezing, weight change, or breathlessness. A cough that does not improve should be assessed rather than assumed to be post nasal drip.
