What should you know about positive chest X-ray?

An unusual shadow, opacity, fluid level or change in lung markings can have several explanations. Pneumonia may produce a new area of inflammation, while Bronchiectasis can be associated with widened airways and repeated chest infections. Tuberculosis is one possibility when the clinical history and imaging pattern fit, but an X-ray alone cannot confirm it. A report may also describe an old scar, technical limitation or a finding that needs comparison with earlier images. Your symptoms, examination and the exact wording of the report guide the next step.

Ask for the written report and arrange a GP Consultation to review it. Take details of cough, fever, breathlessness, weight change, previous infections and any earlier scans. The clinician may recommend repeat imaging, sputum testing, blood tests or Tuberculosis Screening, depending on the finding and your history. Do not assume that a positive result means cancer or an active infection, and do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, or inability to stay awake. Fever with marked weakness or breathing difficulty also needs prompt assessment.
