What should you know about portable chest X-ray?

A portable chest X-ray is an imaging test performed at the bedside when travelling to an X-ray department is difficult or unsafe. A mobile machine sends a small amount of X-ray energy through the chest to create an image. It may be used in hospital rooms, emergency areas, intensive care or other settings where prompt assessment is needed.

The image can help clinicians look for changes such as lung infection, fluid around the lungs, a collapsed area, or changes in the heart size and chest bones. It may support assessment of pneumonia, chronic cough, bronchiectasis or tuberculosis, but an X-ray does not identify every cause of symptoms and is interpreted alongside an examination and medical history.

Tell the radiographer if you could be pregnant, and mention any difficulty sitting, standing or holding your breath. Remove jewellery, clothing fasteners and other metal from the chest area when asked. You may need to sit upright or remain in bed while the detector is positioned behind you. Keep still briefly so movement does not blur the image.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, coughing blood, or chest pain that is severe or persistent. These warning signs need clinical assessment regardless of whether an X-ray has already been arranged. A portable test is a way to gather information, not a substitute for emergency treatment.

Ask why the bedside image is being recommended, what area the clinician is assessing, whether another view or test may be needed, and when you should expect the result. You can also ask how the finding fits with your symptoms and whether follow-up is needed.
