What should you know about pooping cough?

Bearing down raises pressure in the chest and abdomen, which can provoke a cough or make an existing cough more noticeable. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, particularly when bending or sitting after a meal. Mucus from allergic rhinitis, a common cold, or acute bronchitis may also trigger coughing. Asthma can make airways sensitive, while chronic cough, bronchiectasis, or bronchiolitis may cause symptoms that happen regardless of bowel movements. The timing is useful, but it does not by itself diagnose any condition.

Avoid forceful straining and give yourself time to pass stool. Drink enough fluid for your usual needs, add fibre gradually if constipation is contributing, and follow any bowel plan already given by a clinician. If reflux seems possible, note whether the cough follows meals or comes with a sour taste. Keep a record of triggers, phlegm, wheeze, fever, and how long the cough lasts. Do not start antibiotics or someone else’s inhaler without medical advice.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange prompt medical review if cough persists, interrupts sleep, causes vomiting, comes with fever or wheeze, or occurs in a person with significant lung disease. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether respiratory, digestive, or bowel symptoms need further evaluation.
