Pneumonia symptoms: what to know

A cough may be dry or may bring up phlegm. Fever and Chills can occur with infection, while breathing may feel faster, shallower, or harder than usual. Chest pain can be worse when taking a deep breath or coughing. Some people have headache, aches, poor appetite, or low energy.

Older adults and people with weakened immunity may not develop a high fever. Instead, sudden confusion, sleepiness, weakness, or difficulty managing usual tasks can be the main sign. Symptoms can overlap with Influenza, COVID-19, and other illnesses, so a symptom list cannot confirm the cause.

Arrange medical advice when cough or breathlessness is new, persistent, or worsening, particularly if you have a chronic lung condition or reduced immunity. Note when symptoms started, whether you are producing phlegm, and any change in temperature or activity tolerance. Rest, drink fluids if safe, and avoid smoke while waiting for advice.

Call emergency services for severe trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or difficulty staying awake. Seek prompt assessment for chest pain, rapidly worsening symptoms, inability to drink, or signs of Sepsis such as very cold skin, marked weakness, or a sudden collapse.

Ask whether your symptoms need a chest examination, oxygen check, imaging, or other tests. Clarify which treatments are suitable, how to monitor recovery, and exactly which changes should bring you back for review.
