What happens if pneumonia is left untreated?

Pneumonia causes inflammation and fluid in parts of the lungs. If the infection progresses, breathing may become more difficult and the body may receive less oxygen. The infection can also affect the bloodstream or other organs, causing sepsis. Risk is shaped by the germ, the extent of lung involvement and a person’s health, so symptoms cannot predict the course on their own. A cough or fever that persists, worsens, or returns after improvement deserves attention.

Arrange prompt medical review for fever with cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, marked fatigue or coughing up phlegm. The clinician may examine your chest, check oxygen levels and select tests or imaging. Treatment can include targeted medicine, depending on the cause and severity. Take prescribed treatment as directed, rest, drink fluids if appropriate, and avoid smoking. Do not delay because symptoms seem manageable or because you are otherwise young and healthy.

Get emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, collapse, or extreme drowsiness. Seek urgent review for rapidly worsening symptoms, severe chest pain, coughing blood, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine.
