Can vaping cause pneumonia?

Cough, chest pain, fever, fatigue and breathlessness may occur with infectious pneumonia or with a vaping-related inflammatory lung injury. The two problems can overlap, and the device, liquid, additives and frequency of use may be relevant to the assessment. A clinician may ask when symptoms began, what products were used, and whether there was recent contact with someone who had a respiratory infection.

Stop vaping until a clinician has assessed your symptoms, and do not switch to another inhaled product as a workaround. Avoid smoke and strenuous activity if breathing is uncomfortable. Arrange prompt medical advice for a new or worsening cough, fever, chest discomfort or shortness of breath. Bring the product packaging or a clear description of its contents if available, and mention any nicotine or non-nicotine substances used.

Call emergency services for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, chest pressure or inability to stay awake. Urgent review is also needed if breathing worsens quickly, you cannot keep fluids down, or symptoms return after seeming to improve. These signs can reflect serious lung inflammation, infection or another condition requiring immediate treatment.

Ask whether examination or imaging is needed, which products may have contributed, how to manage withdrawal symptoms, and what changes should prompt a return visit.
