Pneumonia in both lungs: what it means

The infection and inflammation involve areas in both lungs rather than being limited to one side. Air sacs can fill with fluid and inflammatory material, making oxygen movement into the blood less efficient. People may develop cough, fever, chills, phlegm, tiredness, or breathlessness. Clinicians may listen to your chest, measure oxygen, and use imaging or other tests to clarify the extent and likely cause. The label does not by itself predict how an individual will recover.

Contact a clinician promptly if bilateral pneumonia is suspected. Treatment depends on the cause and severity and may include targeted medicine, oxygen, fluids, and monitoring. Rest, take medicines on schedule, and drink suitable fluids unless you have a restriction. Avoid smoking and strenuous activity while unwell. Keep track of breathing changes, temperature, alertness, and ability to eat or drink, then report deterioration rather than waiting for a routine review.

Get emergency help if breathing becomes severe or rapidly worse, you cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, your lips look blue or grey, you faint, become confused, or cannot stay awake. Chest pain, coughing blood, or inability to keep fluids down also warrants urgent assessment. A home oxygen reading that is falling or below the range your clinician gave you should prompt immediate medical advice.
