Over-the-counter access means a prescription may not be needed in the place where you obtain the product, but availability and age or pharmacy procedures can differ. Plan B contains levonorgestrel and works mainly by delaying ovulation after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It does not end an established pregnancy, prevent sexually transmitted infections, or provide protection for sex later in the cycle. Temporary nausea, cramps, headache, tiredness, breast tenderness, or a changed next period can occur.

Ask a pharmacist for the product instructions and take it as soon as possible after the contraceptive problem. Mention medicines, supplements, breastfeeding, and any concern about pregnancy. Some medicines can reduce levonorgestrel’s effect. If vomiting occurs soon after the dose, ask whether another dose is needed. Use condoms or another regular method afterwards. A combined pill contains ethinylestradiol and another hormone and is a different contraceptive option; do not substitute it for emergency contraception without professional instructions. Ongoing irregular or painful periods deserve separate assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Get urgent help for severe lower abdominal pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding, especially with a positive pregnancy test. Contact a clinician if the next period is notably late, vomiting prevents keeping the dose down, or pregnancy symptoms develop. Persistent cycle changes may have causes such as Endometriosis, Ovarian Cysts, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and should be assessed rather than assumed to be caused by Plan B.
